THE FIRST STEP
I have the songs now what?
How to get your music out of your bedroom and into the world – book shows, promote shows, work on your performance skills, get a band together and record on the cheap.
At the beginning of your career you don’t need to spend a lot of money to be heard but you do need to be heard. There are many avenues available to early career artists and ways that musician’s can work collectively to support each other’s musical aspirations. We’ll examine models that work and why – as well as putting together a tool kit of first actions you can take to ensure you present your music in the best possible light.
MANAGING YOUR OWN RELEASE PT 1
I have an album recorded and ready to go – now what?
You’ve completed an album and funded it yourself now you want to release it. Are you going to sign a licensing deal with an independent label or release it on your own label? Perhaps you are going to send a single to radio and see how it fares before you approach anyone else? Maybe it’s a better idea to release an EP first? Will you release it digitally and physically? Who are you going to use to distribute your album? Are you going to find a publisher?
We’ll examine all of the options available to you and the best way to approach labels, distributors and publishers. We’ll also look at the importance of TIME MANAGEMENT and a working TIMELINE for your release. They’re in capitals because they’re important and make all the difference between a successful well-timed release and a mismanaged one.
MANAGING YOUR OWN RELEASE PT 2
I know how I am going to release my album but how am I going to market, promote and tour it?
Your timeline is going to be the blueprint for your success whether you are working with a label, distributor and booking agent or handling the release on your own. You’ve done the hard work creating the best possible product you can – now you need to let the world know about it!
We’ll look at the most cost effective ways you can market and promote your album online as well as the more traditional methods of print media and street press. We’ll examine how to roll out a campaign so you are getting the most coverage across all media – online, print, radio and TV. We’ll also look at the importance of touring your release and how to structure touring to best maximise your exposure.
